No. Sodium bicarbonate has no effect on fat metabolism. It can help you lose weight indirectly — less bloat, fewer cravings, and it replaces high-calorie drinks — but the fat loss comes from eating fewer calories than you burn.
For the morning water, ⅛ teaspoon (a pinch) in 8 oz of water — about 150 mg of sodium. Don't use more. Don't do it every day indefinitely. If you have high blood pressure, kidney, heart or stomach conditions, are pregnant, or take medication, ask your doctor before starting.
Baking soda. Baking powder contains added acid and starch and is for baking only. Everything on this site uses plain, food-grade baking soda.

I'm not a doctor or a dietitian, and this site doesn't pretend to be a clinic. I'm a home cook who got tired of miracle claims and started reading the actual sources — then testing what held up in my own kitchen. Every article here says what the evidence supports, what it doesn't, and what I do. When I cite a study, it's linked. When it's just my experience, I say so.
